Can You Play Without Paying?
You can play Star Trek Online free and command your own starship through story missions without buying a premium vessel. That makes it possible to explore its campaigns before deciding whether collecting ships deserves a place in your budget. The main distinction is between enjoying the adventures and chasing an increasingly specialized endgame fleet.
The game combines space battles, ground missions, crew management, and episodic storytelling. Free progression includes ships as you level, so starting without a purchase still gives you opportunities to try different vessels.
Paid options exist alongside that progression. Advanced ships and endgame goals can demand considerable time or money, especially if collecting and optimizing become your main interests. Free-to-play does not mean every ship is free.
For your first captain, focus on the campaign and the ships you receive while leveling. Let the combat teach you what you enjoy before shopping for a vessel built around a playstyle you have barely tried.
Where to Download and What Your PC Needs
Start through the official Star Trek Online website, download the game on Steam, or get the PC version through Epic Games.

The PC version includes these features:
- Windows support
- Multiplayer, MMO, and co-op play
- Full controller support
- In-app purchases
For an Arc account, signing in from a new computer or browser can trigger Arc Defender. Enter the PIN sent to your email to complete that account verification.
PC System Requirements
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10/11, 64-bit | Windows 10/11, 64-bit |
| Processor | Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz or equivalent AMD CPU | Core i5-6xxx Quad Core or better |
| Memory | 4GB RAM | 6GB RAM or better |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 4xx, ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5xxx, or Intel HD Graphics 4xxx; Direct3D Hardware Feature Level 11 | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 9xx or AMD Radeon RX 4xx or better |
| Storage | 21GB | 21GB |
Compare your graphics hardware as well as your RAM before installing. The minimum requirements include a specific Direct3D feature level, so memory alone does not tell you whether a PC meets them.
Choose Your Captain’s Starting Story
Your faction determines the perspective from which you enter the galaxy. The choices include contemporary Starfleet, the Klingon Defense Force, the Romulan Republic, two earlier Starfleet eras, and the Dominion.

| Captain origin | Allegiance | Main faction hub |
|---|---|---|
| Starfleet | Starfleet | Earth Spacedock |
| Klingon Defense Force | Klingon Defense Force | First City |
| Romulan Republic | Starfleet or Klingon Defense Force | New Romulus Command |
| TOS Starfleet | Starfleet | Earth Spacedock, 23rd Century |
| DSC Starfleet | Starfleet | Starfleet Academy, 23rd Century |
| The Dominion | Starfleet or Klingon Defense Force | Deep Space 9 |
Romulan Republic characters belong to the alliance of Romulans and Remans formed after their homeworld’s destruction. Dominion characters bring the Jem’Hadar perspective, while TOS and DSC Starfleet let you begin with the atmosphere and settings of those television eras.
Choose the introduction you want to experience. For a classic-era captain, select TOS Starfleet; for a Discovery-era adventure, select DSC Starfleet. Pick the Romulan Republic if its rebuilding story interests you, or the Klingon Defense Force if you want to serve the Empire.
Learn Space Combat Before Buying Ships
Ship combat revolves around your vessel, weapons, and bridge officer abilities. Cruisers tend toward durability and slower handling, escorts emphasize speed and damage, and science vessels bring another set of capabilities to experiment with.

As you progress, free ship choices let you explore these differences. Use those choices to learn whether you prefer a tougher cruiser or a more agile escort before committing money to an advanced ship.
Customization goes beyond appearance. You can change weapons and bridge officers, and compatible ship variants allow visual parts to be combined. The overall roster spans more than 600 ships from across the shows and movies; that total describes the fleet available across the game, rather than a collection handed to a new captain.
Keep these priorities in mind:
- Read your bridge officer abilities. Your ship’s options extend beyond firing its weapons.
- Compare handling when changing vessels. A slower cruiser and a fast escort call for different expectations.
- Equip your away team, too. Ground missions use weapons, shields, items, and abilities for your landing party.
Ground combat shares the campaign with space battles, so expect regular trips away from the captain’s chair. Its older animations and less polished feel are part of the experience, particularly if you are arriving from a newer action RPG.
What the Free Story Experience Offers
The main setting begins in 2409, with a fractured Romulan Empire, renewed Federation–Klingon conflict, and threats involving the Undine and Iconians. Missions follow an episode structure, sending your captain to investigate situations that develop into larger story arcs.
The appeal for Trek fans is the opportunity to revisit characters and places beyond their television stories. Familiar voices include Kate Mulgrew as Kathryn Janeway, Michael Dorn as Worf, Jeri Ryan as Seven, and René Auberjonois as Odo.
Later adventures expand into time travel, alternate universes, and conflicts across the quadrants. Rediscovered, for example, centers on the disappearances of Lieutenant Miral Paris and Ambassador B’vat, leading into a temporal pursuit involving Spock.
Expect an uneven opening. Earlier mission removals and revisions have left some story transitions disjointed, while later arcs offer more substantial connections to The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager.
Follow the episode structure when you want a continuing adventure, and take time with the dialogue if those character connections brought you here. The campaign gives you a reason to command a ship long before collecting premium vessels becomes a goal.
