What Is Zen in Star Trek Online?
That premium starship comes with a currency decision: spend cash or trade refined dilithium. Star Trek Online zen is the premium currency used in the Zen Store for ships, costumes, playable species, and character services. Understanding how to acquire it helps you budget for the unlocks you actually want.
Zen connects real-money purchases with the player economy. You can buy it through Arc Games or exchange refined dilithium with other players. On PC, Lifetime subscribers also receive a monthly Zen stipend.

Buy Zen With Real Money
Arc Games sells Zen packages, including larger packages with bonus currency. Compare the total Zen received against the checkout price rather than choosing by package size alone.
For example, the Brazilian-real purchase options include:
| Base Zen | Bonus Zen | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 800 | — | R$20.00 |
| 1,600 | — | R$40.00 |
| 4,000 | 240 | R$100.00 |
| 8,000 | 800 | R$200.00 |
| 16,000 | 2,400 | R$400.00 |
These are Brazilian-real prices, not US-dollar prices. Use the currency and total shown at checkout when setting your budget.
A Zen purchase bonus and a Zen Store discount affect different parts of the transaction: one adds currency to your purchase, while the other reduces an item's cost. Compare both before buying a package for a specific unlock.
Exchange Refined Dilithium
The Dilithium Exchange lets you obtain Zen without spending real money by trading refined dilithium with other players. The exchange uses player-set offers within a range of 25–500 dilithium per Zen.
To plan a purchase:
- Choose the Zen Store item you want.
- Check its Zen price.
- Look at the exchange rate for buying Zen.
- Calculate the refined dilithium needed before placing your offer.
Your offer needs a matching trade to complete. A lower dilithium-per-Zen offer costs less currency, but it can leave you waiting for a seller.
Receive the PC Lifetime Stipend
PC Lifetime subscribers receive 500 Zen per month. Treat that as a subscription benefit when weighing the purchase; buying a Lifetime Subscription is a separate expense from buying Zen directly.
How the Dilithium Exchange Works
The exchange has buying and selling sides. When you want Zen, focus on how much refined dilithium you will pay per unit. When you sell Zen, focus on how much dilithium you will receive.

The difference between those prices creates a potential trading spread. Selling Zen at a higher dilithium rate and buying it back at a lower rate can increase your Zen balance—but both trades must complete.
For example, selling at 400 dilithium per Zen and buying back at 398 creates a difference of two dilithium per Zen traded. Those numbers illustrate the calculation; use the prices displayed in your exchange window for an actual order.
Avoid planning a store purchase around an unfinished trade. An attractive offer still has to compete with other orders, and waiting for a better rate can delay access to the item you want.
Zen Store Upgrades Worth Comparing
Ships are a major draw, including premium bundles such as the 10th Anniversary Legendary Starship Bundles and the Gamma Vanguard Pack. Character services offer another way to spend your balance.

Compare these upgrades by their actual benefits:
| Item | Zen Cost | Main Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Elite Services Starter Pack | 1,000 | Inventory slots, bank slots, re-train tokens, and two bridge officer slots |
| Energy Credit Cap Increase | 500 | Raises the Energy Credit cap to 2 billion |
| Elite Captain Training Token | 1,500 | Adds personal ground and space trait slots, a kit module slot, and a ground device slot |
| Elite Bridge Officer Training Token | 500 | Upgrades one bridge officer to ultra-rare and adds training and ground equipment benefits |
The Elite Services Starter Pack is a once-per-character unlock. Choose the recipient carefully, especially if you play several captains. The pack also participates in bundle sales, so check its price before purchasing individual services.
The Energy Credit Cap Increase matters when saving for expensive player Exchange purchases. Keep the two markets straight: the player Exchange uses Energy Credits, while the Dilithium Exchange trades refined dilithium and Zen.
Use an Elite Captain Training Token on a character whose extra trait and kit module slots you intend to use. For bridge officers, the corresponding token also teaches standard ground and space abilities for their class and upgrades inherent traits to their maximum rank.
Check Giveaways Before Spending
The Elite Services Starter Pack has appeared in promotional giveaways. Check active offers before buying it, particularly when expanding another character's inventory or bank.
Ship coupons and event campaign rewards also provide routes to Zen Store ships. Read the reward choices before spending Zen on a ship you could select through an event.
Skip old instructions for earning currency through Arc Quests. That program no longer offers a way to earn Zen. For a purchase funded through gameplay, work toward a refined-dilithium exchange order instead.
