How to Start STO Without Opening Steam
Searching for “Star Trek Online how to start without launcher”? Open the STO launcher directly from your installed game folder to skip the Steam launch step. You’ll still use the game’s own launcher, but this gives you another way in when launching through Steam fails.
The distinction matters: bypassing Steam or Arc means opening the STO launcher yourself. It does not mean skipping that launcher and going straight into your captain’s session.
These instructions focus on the Windows PC game:
| PC detail | Game information |
|---|---|
| PC platform | Windows |
| Game format | Massively Multiplayer, RPG |
If STO is already installed, start with those existing files. You don’t need a separate standalone-installer download to try direct launching.
Find the Launcher in Your Steam Installation
The Steam installation places STO inside your Steam library’s game directory. Open that location in File Explorer:
Image: Steam / Cryptic Studios
- Find the Steam library folder where you installed STO.
- Open
steamapps, thencommon. - Open the
Star Trek Onlinefolder. - Open the STO launcher from inside that folder.
The relative folder path is:
steamapps/common/Star Trek Online
Use the library containing the game, especially if you install games on a different drive from Steam itself. The important location is STO’s installed folder.
Run the existing launcher before changing or reinstalling anything. This route targets the Steam launch step; it gives you access to the same installed game through its own launcher.
Once you’ve located it, create a desktop shortcut to the launcher executable. Keep the executable in its installation folder and use the shortcut for easier access.
What About Steam Playtime?
Don’t rely on launching from File Explorer to record your session in Steam. Direct launching can leave that playtime uncounted.
If tracking hours on your Steam profile matters to you, use Steam’s normal launch route when it is working.
For the February 2024 Steam launch problem, a playtime workaround used both launch routes. Start STO through Steam and leave the failure-to-launch window open. Then open the game from its installation files. If an “application is already being run” message appears, accept it to continue. Leaving the Steam failure window open was part of that workaround for keeping the session’s hours on the Steam profile.
Open an Existing Arc Installation Directly
An Arc-installed copy can also contain the STO launcher executable. An older Windows installation layout used this path:
Image: Steam / Cryptic Studios
E:\Games\Perfect World Entertainment\Star Trek Online_en\Star Trek Online.exe
That is an example installation path, rather than a folder you need to create. Find your own STO installation and look for Star Trek Online.exe.
To use it:
- Open your existing STO installation folder.
- Find
Star Trek Online.exe. - Open it directly.
- Create a desktop shortcut if you want to use that route again.
The executable is the launcher in this setup. Opening it avoids starting the game through Arc’s interface.
Do You Need an Old Standalone Installer?
Skip the hunt for a legacy installer when you already have STO installed. The launcher you need is already present in the Steam installation or the older Arc installation layout described above.

The old standalone-installer download was circulating in February 2016. A replacement copy of a previously downloaded launcher was uploaded in June 2021 after trouble with the original link. These legacy downloads are separate from the executable in your existing installation.
A standalone launcher still performs a launcher’s job; it isn’t a shortcut around the game’s entire startup process. Downloading another installer adds an unnecessary step when your goal is simply to open the existing launcher directly.
If you need to install the game from scratch, use the Star Trek Online Steam page or the Star Trek Online official website for installation options.
